Once the firewall examines this header information, it can better judge if the data information is forwarded correctly or has been sent in error. Advanced hardware firewalls also study the content of data packets in addition to the header information by a methodology called SPI or Stateful Packet Inspection. In the case of routers as firewalls, they generate a common IP address for the router itself and all the computers within the network are handled via the single address. This ensures optimum protection since launching an attack on a computer that is protected behind a router with a firewall would be much harder than accessing a computer that is protected with an address translation where the data transfer directly transmits to the PC.
